Our hearts are incredibly heavy after the Uvalde, TX school shooting. If you’re feeling called to show support during this tragic time, here’s how to help.

Give blood so there are always immediate supplies available.

Historically, there’s a dire need to build up blood supply in the event of a horrific disaster. Giving blood ensures hospitals have immediate access to supplies they need following any tragic event and is the number one way people can help save lives.

While many local blood drives are filling up quickly after the Robb Elementary School shooting, you can head to University Health or South Texas Blood & Tissue to find out ways you can still donate blood locally.

University Health is the largest transfuser of blood in the greater San Antonio area and is one of two Level I trauma centers in San Antonio.

Additionally, Hillcrest Memorial Funeral Home and Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary Uvalde (two local funeral homes) will NOT be charging families involved in the Robb Elementary school shooting. Reach out to either location to find out if they’re taking donations for the victim’s families.

Send letters of hope and support to first responders along with the staff and students of Robb Elementary School.

It will take years for the Uvalde community to grapple with the aftermath of one of the deadliest school shootings in American history. Moving forward in the hours, days, weeks, and years to come, we ALL need to choose to be a light in this dark world and take time to let our loved ones know just how much we care.

Life is so short and time is so precious. Slow down and take full advantage of every opportunity to be a light and spread joy. Hug your loved ones extra tight, give a friend a compliment, smile at a stranger, and spread joy whenever and wherever you go.

Talking to your kids who are aware of this horrible tragedy is one of the very best ways we can help during such a catastrophic time. It’s crucial for everyone’s mental health to know someone is always here to listen and be available to discuss feelings and the events that occurred.

Here are other ways you can help your children during this difficult time:

    • Maintain a routine to feel a sense of normalcy.
    • Turn off the TV, social media, and news to limit their sense of fear or anxiousness.
    • Discuss your family emergency plan so your family is always prepared.
    • Watch for changes in your child’s mood, behavior, sleep, and eating. Seek immediate help if any become worrisome.
